A well-known educational consultant, Dr. Mack Hines heads an education consultancy in Prosper, Texas. In this role, he works with school districts to develop culturally-appropriate ways to teach African-American students. Dr. Mack Hines holds a doctorate in educational leadership from South Carolina State University and an education specialist degree from Winthrop University, which has announced a new international teaching opportunity. Winthrop University’s Richard W. Riley College of Education has formed a partnership with Ellson Elite Schools in Shijiazhuang, China, to provide students, teachers, and faculty with opportunities to teach abroad. The goal of the program is to help them develop a broader perspective in order to effectively reach students in today’s diverse classrooms in the United States. The program has two components. The first is a one-month cultural and teaching experience in July at Ellson’s summer camp programs. This program will be available to upperclassmen who are teaching candidates and to recent Winthrop graduates, as well as to faculty members and teachers who belong to Winthrop’s Partnership Network, a collaborative effort of nine local districts to improve pre-service teacher education, professional development, and student learning. The second component of the new program is a year-long teaching experience for licensed teachers or individuals who have graduated with teacher preparation or related training. Winthrop and Ellson aim to expand the program and develop a two-week summer camp at Winthrop to bring together American and Chinese students and teachers for an intercultural experience.
